While Performance was being filmed, I felt, quite erroneously, that I had nothing to worry about. I never imagined Mick would be fucking Anita.
I see Anita as very much a victim of all this, the vulnerable one who should have been looked after and protected. Her breakup with Brian over the previous year had been devastating. It was only natural that she would find Mick’s incarnation of Turner irresistible. Their characters were propelled toward each other, and she already had a hard time distinguishing what was real and what imaginary.
The only person who was never out of control and might have showed some restraint was Mick. But poor Mick was on a bit of a high wire himself. He was somewhat cowed by Donald, who had a ferocious temper and would go off like a firecracker, unleashing blistering tirades. Mick found the whole process of filming very bewildering. Compared to performing in a rock ’n’ roll band, it was excruciating. The repetitiousness, the retakes, the out-of-sequence performing to thin air. Mick was losing control!
I tried not to think about it at all. I concentrated on living with my mother and Nicholas in Ireland and pretending everything was okay. Anita was my dearest friend and Mick was the man I loved. I was expecting his baby. I guess I knew by then that things weren’t right between Mick and me, but I didn’t know what to do about it. It was terrible.
And anyway, who was I to talk? I’d had my blazing affair with Tony Kent the year before. It was like that then. . . . If it felt good, you did it. That was part of our creed. It would have been hypocritical not to sleep with someone simply because he or she was involved with someone else!
Mick and I in our usual manner never discussed it. It just stayed there hanging between us in the air. I knew nothing then about talking things out, and even if I had I wouldn’t have had the courage to bring it up. It would probably only have made matters worse.
Even the customarily fearless Keith couldn’t handle this one. While filming was going on Keith deliberately stayed away from the set. To go up there would have meant a head-on clash with Mick. Keith knew that if he had ever done so, it would have been the end of the band.
It was just before they started filming that Keith wrote “You’ve Got the Silver.” He and Anita were staying at Robert’s flat. Robert had rented his place to Anita for an exorbitant amount of money and then refused to move out, creating yet another quasi-ménage à trois.
Keith’s method is to take the germ of a song and nag at it, all the while keeping it to himself. He played his guitar constantly. I never saw him without it. He’s the lute player sitting in the window, that’s Keith exactly. Always gnawing at a song. And very secretive about this process. It stays in his head until it’s finished.
